One of my specialties is creating characters to be used as mascots, logos or book illustrations. I find it so enjoyable imagining then designing a relatable character that people will respond to. Once you have created a likeable ambassador that has caught people’s attention, it’s so much easier to communicate your message through that character. |
Over the years I have created a diverse range of characters and mascots. When a client wants to know how much a character will cost; well, the estimate is in the detail. Here is a quick time guide for two options below:
|
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
While most companies and organisations need a single character to be used in just one way, others need a more elaborate character or mascot that can be multitasked for a variety of uses. For them I create the character in parts. At first this process seems very odd, but when the body parts are joined together and flipped, the character can be multitasked into so many combinations and poses. Initially, the character takes a bit more time to develop, but the benefits in the long term are huge.
Below is the process I went through to create Aussie Koala for Aussie Outdoors |
I talked about the character with client and what they hoped to achieve with their mascot, then I created the initial drafts. |
Once the drafts were approved, I separated the body parts and did further test to see if they could be successfully multitasked. |
The next stage was to draw the body parts onto watercolour paper and then to paint them. |
Once the painting is finished, I scan, touch up and digitise the body parts into layers. |
Once digitalised and there are layers, the character can quickly be multitasked into a hoard of combinations and can even be animated. |
The characters are then saved in high resolution so they look great from business cards to banner signs. |
